“Sung” glazed dish by Carl Halier
Dish with inward curved sides, carved groove texture, and “Sung” glaze by Carl Halier (1873-1948) for Royal Copenhagen, glazed stoneware, Denmark, 1936-1948; stamp and triple wave mark for RC, inscribed artist cipher, numbered “21824”/ CHSung004
Named after the glazing used on ceramics from China’s Sung Dynasty period, Royal Copenhagen’s “Sung” glaze, with its organic variations between deep brown and pale warm gray is prized by collectors for its rich and earthy sense of texture. To control glaze flow and encourage highlighting, RC potters would carve horizontal/concentric grooves in the surface of a ceramic vase or dish, adding another layer of texture.
