Rare fluted table lamp by Svend Hammershøi

A rare model designed by Svend Hammershøi (1873-1948) for Kähler Keramik, this handsome table lamp in an artistic Skønwirke style (the local Danish flavor of the Arts and Crafts movement) appears to be a dreamy reinterpretation of a Classical fluted column. The base is a cylindrical form, with hand-carved vertical flutes encircling most of its height, with an undulating capital of projecting scotia rings, and a torus ring base set apart by a clever reveal, wonderfully hand-formed and carved in earthenware glazed in a white-black tin-based formulation developed by Jens Thirslund, to articulates the complex surfaces that are a hallmark of Hammershøi’s work. Denmark, 1910s-1920s; inscribed “HAK” for Kähler / #SHA114
