Extraordinary monumental vase by Jens Thirslund for Kähler

Monumental vase by Jens Thirslund (1892-1942) for Kähler, having a wide shouldered form with lip and inward taper at base and decorated with a low relief design of alternating scrolling forms glazed a green-black color, with a deep blue background and gold highlights, Denmark, 1913-early 1920s. Inscribed “HAK” and artist monogram for Jens Thirslund.

The wide shouldered form and scrolling pattern encircling the vase seem to be inspired by the shape and decoration of ancient Minoan pottery, while the expressive style and whirling surface texture suggests the influence of Thorvald Bindesbøll’s distinctive ceramic designs. An important figure in the Danish Arts and Crafts movement, Bindesbøll was also a friend and mentor to Svend Hammershøi, Thirslund’s frequent collaborator at Kähler.
