Michael Andersen & Sons

Striking bowl surrounded in sculptural vertical ribs (or deeply carved flutes) and finished with a carved surface texture, in stoneware glazed in flowing green-brown-gray and accented in vermillion along the top edge and ribbing, Denmark, 1916-early 1920s; marked “MA&S” and “4567”

The unique and evocative combination of form, texture, and glazing suggests either an ancient bronze artifact or a prehistoric shell fossil inspired by the engravings of Ernst Haekel.
